Commissions
If you would like to commission a portrait all you need to do is send me a good sharp photo, the more detailed it is the better. You can do this by sending it to me in an email or by post. Please see below for more detailed instructions and for price guides.
The Process
1. Send In Your Photo
The more detailed your photo is the better I will be able to pick up the likeness of the person or pet. If the commission is for two or more people/pets you can send in multiple photos which I can then arrange into one portrait. Either email the photos over to me at
or give me a call on
or
to arrange to send them by post. If you are local I am also available to come and take photos free of charge to use as references.
2. Choose The Size & Type
Along with your photo you'll need to specify the size and type of portrait you would like. You can see what types of portraits I am offering at the moment below but if you need a specific size or media not mentioned please contact me and we can discuss your exact requirements.
3. Define The Details
If you have any ideas you would like to include in addition to the basic portrait you will need to request these, for example, a specific background colour or additional designs such as flowers or personal items. If you are sending in a black and white photo for me to draw in colour you will need to describe the colours too.
4. On Completion
Once I have completed the portrait I will send you a scanned, watermarked copy of your finished drawing with an invoice. If you are happy with it you can then send in a cheque for the full amount and once the cheque has cleared I will send you your drawing. If you are local I can also accept cash payments in exchange for your portrait.
Types & Pricing
1. Graphite Portrait
These are done using a range of Daler Rowney Artists Graphic pencils. I try to use a lot of contrast in the drawing to really bring the person out from the page. The blending of soft and harder pencils gives the portrait a soft feel whilst keeping the intricate details of the eyes and other outlines sharp. See examples

2. Colour Pencil Portrait or Natural Portrait
For these I use a wide range of coloured pencils to get a deep realistic blend. I've also recently added what I've decided to call the 'natural portrait' where only black and brown colour pencils are used. This gives a warmer, softer feel to the drawing and the black coloured pencils can make much darker shadows than graphite ones. See examples

3. Biro Portrait
This is the newest media I've added which is definitely my favourite at the moment. Using biros means I carefully build up layer on layer of pen, either in black or blue ink or a combination of both. It can create beautifully dark shadows and the details really stand out from the page. The drawings do take longer to create because there is no ablity to blend and so more pen strokes must be made but the results are stunning. See examples

All prices are guides only as all portraits are individually priced once I have seen your photo and we have discussed exactly what you would like. All portraits come with a shaded background free in your choice of colour and are presented in a glass clip frame.
